The Pursuit of Happiness

Using Jeffrey Rosen’s book The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Founders and Defined America’s Way of Life, this course explores how ideas from ancient philosophy shaped the values embedded in America’s founding documents. Participants will consider how virtues such as industry, frugality, justice, and moderation influenced the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Through discussion and reflection, the class will examine how these timeless concepts continue to inform our understanding of democracy, freedom, and civic life today.
Required Text: The Pursuit of Happiness by Jeffrey Rosen (ISBN 978-1-6680-0247-6). Students should obtain their own copy.
