A Short History of Public Transportation in the United States (1886–Present)
Instructor: Glen Bottoms
Thursdays, 2:30–4:00 PM | Jan 22 – Mar 5, 2026 | Sunny Slope Main Classroom

From the horse-drawn streetcars of the late 19th century to today’s modern light rail, rapid transit, intercity rail, and electric buses, public transportation in the United States has reflected—and shaped—the nation’s social and economic evolution. This course traces the history of American transit systems through seven distinct eras: the rise of street railways, the “Golden Era” (1886–1929), the Great Depression and World War II years, the automobile boom of the 1950s, the challenges and reforms of the 1960s–70s, and the innovations of the modern era. Participants will also explore the dramatic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and compare U.S. transit systems with those of other countries to identify lessons for the future.
