Since the end of World War II, the United States has relied on military force as one of its primary foreign policy tools-often with mixed or unintended results. This course examines key moments over the past 75 years in which American military power was applied in ways that proved ineffective, counterproductive, or damaging to U.S. interests abroad. Through case studies and discussion, participants will explore how these decisions shaped global politics, influenced international perceptions of the United States, and contributed to strategic or diplomatic setbacks. The course also considers the broader implications for America's role as a defender of democracy and the rule of law. This is an intergenerational course and will include participation from Auburn University graduate students.
About the Instructor:
Michael Baker is a retired U.S. Navy Admiral with extensive experience in global military operations, strategic planning, and crisis response. His service includes deployments around the world, a combat tour with the Marines during Desert Storm, and senior-level planning assignments in locations such as CENTCOM, South Korea, Egypt, and Latvia. He has also supported humanitarian and disaster-response missions. Admiral Baker has taught OLLI courses for more than five years at Cal State East Bay, Cal State Channel Islands, UC Berkeley, and Dominican University.
