Utopia and Terror in the 20th Century, Part 2

This course continues the video-based series Utopia and Terror in the 20th Century, taught by Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius and produced by The Great Courses. It examines one of the central questions of modern history: How did ideologies that promised a perfect society lead instead to violence and repression on a global scale? Through a combination of video lectures and discussion, participants will analyze the rise and impact of Fascism, Nazism, Communism, and other totalitarian movements that reshaped the 20th century. While this is a continuation of the Fall 2025 course, new participants are welcome to join and will be provided with the necessary context to follow along.

About the Instructor:
John Parr, PhD, served 22 years in the US Navy, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He was Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Evansville (Indiana) from 1988–2010. He holds degrees from Auburn University and the Naval Postgraduate School and has been an OLLI member and Auburn resident since 2013.
