This class will survey the civilization of the Normans and beyond. From William the Conqueror and his dynasty came the development of an England significantly different from that of the Anglo-Saxon world. We shall consider the history of medieval England through the late 14th century and the reign of Edward III. We’ll consider its wars as well as the legal and administrative developments that were so important for the English future. Winter term concludes with consideration of the Hundred Years War and the Black Death signifying the great change in late medieval England.
