Smart-devices (iPhone, iPad etc.), have evolved to a point where they can support a variety of geospatial applications (apps) and GPS devices that integrate seamlessly with aerial imagery to map, delineate or identify management concerns both in the field and in the office. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are continuously dropping in price and offering natural resource managers more opportunities to collect aerial imagery to identify a variety of real-time management concerns. Today, these smart-devices and UAVs have made the technology more easily adoptable, affordable and easy-to-use for a broader range of non-technical users. This introductory workshop provides a hands-on training opportunity on how to use smart-devices to collect, draw and interpreted georeferenced data for developing maps for improved forest management. Specifically, we have the following learning objectives: • Introduce audience to user-friendly GIS apps and GPS for iPhone and iPad • Train audiences on using smart-devices to collect GPS data in the field • Train audiences to use GIS apps to develop maps for natural resource management • Demonstrate the capabilities of UAVs for collecting real-time aerial imagery • Demonstrate how to process and transfer UAV aerial imagery and data to the iPad apps • Train attendees how to share collected data with natural resource managers
