Wherever you live, you live within a watershed. A watershed is a naturally defined area of land that channels rainfall and snowmelt to creeks, streams, and rivers, and eventually to outflow points such as reservoirs, bays, and oceans. The land use activities in your watershed can ultimately influence the quality of water in a region. Citizens can become involved with improving local water quality through watershed planning efforts. Watershed planning is an integrated approach to responsible resource management by considering the watershed as a whole. The process involves several factors such as targeting problem areas in a watershed, promoting awareness and involvement of stakeholders, and developing solutions to identified problems.
About the workshop:
This workshop, hosted by The Alabama Watershed Stewards (AWS) program, is a statewide science-based educational program that promotes healthy watersheds, increases understanding of water pollution, and provides the knowledge and tools needed to prevent and resolve local water quality problems. This watershed planning workshop hosted by AWS is open to the public.
In this watershed planning workshop, you will learn about:
I. Watershed planning
II. The basics of watershed management
III. How to get involved with local groups and organizations
If you would like to become a citizen science water quality monitor via Alabama Water Watch, you can also sign up for their workshop which are held in conjunction with this training.
The program is put on by Alabama Cooperative Extension System Water Program, in partnership with Alabama Water Watch, Auburn's Water Resources Center, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, and various other local partners.
