This 1-day workshop will introduce participants to proper inspection and maintenance practices for urban stream restoration projects. The workshop will include both classroom and field learning events, with the opportunity for stream restoration site visits in Auburn, Lannett, and Valley, Alabama. Stream restoration projects may include channel and floodplain grading, enhancement of riffles and pools, installation of in-stream log and rock structures, bioengineering for streambank stabilization, planting of native riparian vegetation, and stormwater outfall treatments. Presentations and field tours of local stream restoration projects will describe restoration techniques for urban streams, including a discussion on: preventing streambank erosion, maintaining in-stream structures, managing and maintaining riparian vegetation, stormwater outfalls and building in maintenance into existing management systems. Participants will gain an understanding of what key features of restoration projects need to be inspected and maintained, and the frequency at which projects should be assessed.
